5 reasons why employees don’t tap vacation time

There’s nothing wrong with employees who prefer work to vacation, right? Not necessarily.

Employees who skimp on vacation time are prone to burnout, some studies suggest. Rest and time away from “the grind” helps most folks re-charge and come back to work with renewed focus and energy.

So why do a whopping 75% of U.S. workers not use all of their allowed vacation time every year? There are various reasons, according to a survey at Glassdoor.com. Employees report they lose it (vacation time) instead of using it because:

  • No one else can do their jobs (33%)
  • They’re afraid of “getting too far behind (28%)
  • The company comes first (22%)
  • They’re seeking a promotion (19%), and
  • They fear losing their job (17%).

Even when you go away, work pulls you back in

Turns out the 25% who use their hours still get sucked back into work. Among that group:

  • 24% say co-workers have called them about a work issue
  • 20% were contacted by their bosses, and
  • 17% worried half the time about work they weren’t getting done!

Sounds like that group really needed a vacation after their lack of a vacation.
