Do you know these red flags for fraudsters? A quick checklist
Full-time accounting and finance pro, part-time sociologist? That might be exactly what you want from your team members.
Because with fraud, people’s behavior almost always gives them away first.
In a whopping 92% of the fraud cases recently reviewed by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, at least one common behavioral red flag was ID’d before the fraud was detected.
So do your staffers know what to look for?
Spotting the signs
A new year is the perfect time for a renewed push to be more attuned to these signs of possible trouble, from most to less common:
- living beyond means
- financial difficulties
- an unusually close relationship with a vendor or customer
- an unwillingness to share duties or other control issues
- wheeler-dealer attitude
- divorce or family problems
- irritability, suspiciousness or defensiveness
- addiction problems, and
- past complaints about inadequate pay.
