Any employees who switched to public transportation because of the rising gas prices aren’t going to be thrilled about the move Congress just made.
The House recently opted not to approve a multi-year Surface Transportation Reauthorization bill. The bill, which was approved by the Senate, would’ve restored the maximum pre-tax monthly contribution for mass transit commuters to $240, a significant increase from the $125 maximum it’s at now.
In January, the limit for mass transit commuters was cut from $230 to $125, while the maximum allowable for parking costs increased from $230 to $240 per month.
Allowing workers to telecommute more often is one thing employers can do to help people with the increasing cost commuting.
