Last year, financial institutions had to contend with record-low interest rates and a glut of deposits. But that didn’t stop community banks from becoming vital partners to businesses, delivering a blend of personalized service and prudent risk management practices that you might not be able to get from a large national bank.

Based on 2021 FDIC data, the Independent Community Bankers of America (ICBA) assigned community banks a score that weighs the average of a bank’s percentile rank for lending concentration and loan growth over the past year. Each score was also adjusted for loan charge offs at certain percentile thresholds.

Here’s now a new report from ICBA ranked the top 10 commercial community banks, grouped by size.

Less than $300 million in assets

The smallest community banks with the best lending are:

  1. Barwick Banking Company (Barwick, GA)
  2. State Bank (Rock Springs, WY)
  3. California International Bank, N.A. (Westminster, CA)
  4. Kendall Bank (Valley Falls, KS)
  5. United Bank of Philadelphia (Philadelphia, PA)
  6. PeopleFirst Bank (Joliet, IL)
  7. CapTex Bank, National Association (Trenton, TX)
  8. Unity National Bank (Houston, TX)
  9. The Home Savings and Loan Company of Kenton, Ohio (Kenton, OH), and
  10. North Valley Bank (Denver, CO).

  2. Quaint Oak Bank (Southampton, PA)
  3. Flagship Bank (Clearwater, FL)
