Contrary to popular belief, good looks will actually hurt your chances of landing that job — if you’re a woman trying to work in certain fields.
According to a recent study by the University of Colorado Denver Business School, good looks can all but kill a qualified woman’s chances of being hired in certain jobs that are traditionally viewed as masculine.
Participants in the study were given a list of jobs, as well as photos of 55 male and 55 female applicants. Participants were then asked to sort the photos according to their suitability for the job.
The study found that attractive men were not ruled out for any positions and always at an advantage.
On the other hand, attractive women actually faced discrimination in positions such as manager of research and development, director of finance, mechanical engineer and construction supervisor, as well as director of security, hardware salesperson, prison guard and tow-truck driver.
However, according to researcher Stephanie Johnson, “In every other kind of job, attractive women were preferred.”
