The top 4 cybersecurity predictions for 2013
Is your IT department watching out for the latest threats?
Antivirus software company Symantec recently released their top security predictions for the new year. The company talked to hundreds of in-house IT experts before boiling it down a handful of predictions that best summarize where the cyberthreat landscape is heading.
1. Beware of “Ransomware”
Symantec says ransomware attempts to bully and intimidate its victims instead of just fooling them. Ransomware will typically lock the computer and disable functionality until a payment is made using an online payment system. This is fairly new in the malicious malware world, but it’s a growing threat. Read a full report here.
2. Mobile adware hitting hard
Typically referred to as “madware,” this type of bug affects mobile devices (smartphones, tablets) by exposing location info, contact details and device identifiers. Madware sneaks onto devices when downloading apps, so it’s important that workers only download absolutely essential apps from trusted app markets.
3. Cybercriminals targeting social networks
With social networks now placing an emphasis on spending money for virtual currency, like “gift credits”, cybercriminals have enough reason to place networks like Facebook on their radar. Symantec anticipates malware being spread through these networks to steal payment credentials or non-financial data in an effort to steal your identity.
4. Attackers heading to the cloud, too
As more businesses use the cloud, attackers are following. Mobile platforms are at risk, especially with the dawning of eWallet technology (using mobile devices for payment).
Your best bet: Make sure IT keeps up with the latest mobile security solutions in order to protect your company’s data.
