How much more do CFOs at public firms make?
While it’s true that finance chiefs at public firms have the added stress of dealing directly with the public markets, you may be surprised to see just how more they bring home than their peers in the private sector.
Public-company CFOs make about 45% more annually than finance chiefs at private firms. According to a new study by MyCFOnetwork, the median cash salary of a public CFO is $267,976 compared to $190,715 for CFOs at private companies.
The study also found that company size plays a huge role in just how wide the pay gap is.
For organizations with revenue between $21 million and $90 million, there’s only a 14% difference in cash compensation between public and private CFOs.
However, at companies with more than $500 million in revenue, the cash difference is 85% between the two groups.
It’s worth noting that the MyCFOnetwork study did not account for equity packages that are part of CFOs total compensation.
