Stop assuming your cybersecurity is top-notch
Most small-to-midsize-business owners think their data is safe and secure – yet, they have no plan for a costly cyber threat.
Those are just some of the findings from a recent survey that found 77% of 1,015 small and medium-size businesses (SMBs) believe their business is safe from hackers, viruses, malware and cybersecurity breaches. However, 83% have no formal plan to address possible threats.
There’s more. Cyberattacks against SMBs have more than doubled, jumping from 18 percent in 2011 to 36 percent in 2012. Yet 66% of SMBs are unconcerned about cyberthreats, according to the survey, which comes from National Cyber Security Alliance and Symantec, a provider of security services and software.
Other findings include:
- 59% do not have a contingency plan outlining procedures for responding and reporting data breach losses
- 87% do not have an informal Internet security policy, and
- 70% do not have policies for employee social media use, even though social media have become an increasingly popular for phishing attacks.
