Do your IT folks have these 10 skills?
With the money your company pumps into IT salaries, those techies had better be on top of their game.
How to tell? Check that they possess these 10 most-critical-today skills, according to NetworkWorld:
- Wireless
- Virtualization
- Security
- Networking
- Application delivery
- Web 2.0
- IT business analysis
- Database management
- Business intelligence/data mining
- “The X Factor” — specialists no more, you want IT people who understand the broad spectrum of your business and can figure out how various systems and networks can all link and work together.
That’s a pretty big job description. And granted not every IT staffer on your payroll will possess expertise in all of these. (You certainly want an IT manager who’s competent in most of these.)
Think of it as a recipe for a successful IT group — different staffers can supplement with different skills, so ideally you have the entire list covered.
What you don’t need
And while you might think that doesn’t leave any competency off the list, there are several skills that you don’t need to scan for on IT resumes (or pay for any additional training on):
- HTML
- Legacy programming languages
- NetWare
- Non-IP network
- PC tech support
