Company to smokers: 'Not while you're on the clock'
Employers often gripe about workers who take too many smoke breaks. Here’s an organization that actually did something about it.
Breckland Council, which is located in the English county of Norfolk, just rolled out a new policy regarding its employees’ smoke breaks.
Breckland workers can still smoke as much as they like during work hours, but there’s one caveat. Workers will no longer be paid for these smoke breaks, and they must clock out — and back in — if they go out on a cigarette break.
While Breckland Council leader William Nunn says the policy will ensure “fairness for all,” the move has a fair share of detractors.
For example, Forest, a smokers’ lobby group, called the policy “tyrannical” and said people should be entitled to a cigarette break during work.
