Is my boss a bully? 8 questions that will tell you
Sometimes the line between a fair, but highly demanding boss and an outright bully can get a little murky — and if any of your company’s managers fall into the latter category it can be a huge and costly problem.
To help employees determine if their manager or supervisor actually is a bully, Drs. Gary and Ruth Namie have created the following eight questions test, which employers can pass along to employees during workplace bullying training:
1. Does your manager/supervisor blame you for fabricated “errors” or mistakes?
2. Are you given unreasonable job demands or goals?
3. Does your manager/supervisor threaten you with pay cuts or termination?
4. Does your manager/supervisor insult and/or criticize your abilities? Does it have in front of others?
5. Are you excluded by your manager/supervisor and his or her “henchmen” or given the silent treatment?
6. Does you manager/supervisor yell, scream or curse at you?
7. Does your manager/supervisor enforce the rule inconsistently?
8. Does your manager/supervisor deny or discount your accomplishment and/or take credit for your success?
