Business spends 8 figures on employee's tongue
Your company probably spends a lot to insure its assets — but is your tongue one of them?
Britain’s Costa Coffee Company recently admitted to taking out a $14 million insurance policy on taste tester Gennaro Pelliccia’s tongue.
“My 18 years of experience enable me to distinguish between thousands of flavors, which enables me to protect and guarantee Costa’s unique Mocha Italia blend,” said Pelliccia.
Although competing chains like Starbucks have been scaling back their production and marketing efforts, Costa has so far avoided any ill effects from the recession and reported positive sales growth last year.
Pelliccia’s tongue is one of the most expensive assets to be insured, according to Lloyd’s of London. “The taste buds of a ‘master of coffee’ are as important as the vocal chords of a singer or the legs of a top model,” said a Lloyd’s spokesperson.
To put it into perspective, Bruce Springsteen’s vocal chords are also insured by Lloyd’s — but for only $4.8 million.
