Disaster tax relief comes to businesses in 7 states, IRS announces
Several natural disasters have translated into federal disaster tax relief for employers in seven states. IRS has pushed back both filing and payment deadlines.
First, for businesses hit hard by Hurricane Ida last summer, the Taxman recently handed out an additional six weeks to meet federal tax deadlines.
IRS announced that businesses in six states now have until Feb. 15 to file. Before this, the most recent deadline was Jan. 3, 2022.
This most updated relief postpones various tax filing and payment deadlines that occurred starting on dates that vary by state:
- Louisiana: Aug. 26, 2021
- Mississippi: Aug. 28, 2021
- Pennsylvania: Aug. 31, 2021, and
- New York, New Jersey and Connecticut: Sept. 1, 2021.
And if your Colorado business felt the impact of the devastating wildfires that swept the Boulder area last month, IRS has also handed you some tax relief.
The Service announced it pushed back several filing and payment deadlines.
That includes 2021 business returns normally due on March 15 and April 18, as well as quarterly payroll and excise tax returns normally due on Jan. 31 and May 2, 2022.
Your company’s new deadline: May 16, 2022.
Note: More places may get this same relief as more areas are declared disaster areas. We’ll keep you posted.
Of course there’s still a chance you won’t have to wait for an IRS announcement in the near future for disaster tax relief … if a proposed rule to grant automatic 60-day deadline extensions gets passed.
