Tenn. unveils English-only workplace law: Who's next?
A law allowing companies to mandate an “English-only” workplace has been enacted in Tennessee.
The law — signed into effect by Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen — also requires employers to provide workers with adequate notice about its English-only policy, as well as the consequences employees will face for violating it.
In response to the likelihood of discrimination claims for instituting an English-only policy, the law states that it is not discriminatory “at certain times when the employer has a legitimate business necessity for such a policy, including but not limited to the safe and efficient operation of the employer’s business.”
After reviewing the state’s current legislation, it was determined that the English-only portion of the bill would not change Tennessee law, the governor’s office said.
Readers, do you think companies should have the right to implement “English-only” policies in their offices? Do you think other states will enact similar laws as a result? Share you thoughts with us in the Comments section.
