Where your risk of being sued is greatest
Here are some unattractive odds for you: If you’re a U.S.-based business with at least 10 employees, you have a 12.5% chance of having an employment liability charge filed against your company. Ouch.
And if you’re located in any of these areas, your odds are even worse: Alabama, California, Mississippi, Illinois and Washington DC. They all have higher-than-average instances of employee lawsuit.
The kicker: It can happen to the most careful of companies.
2 areas to refortify fast
No matter where you’re located, you can minimize your risk of contending with a costly claim by shoring up on two fronts:
- Policies: Your company must have formal written policies spelling out not only what is and isn’t tolerated but the consequences for violating them.
- Training. All supervisors must receive ongoing employment law training in everything from discrimination and harassment to retaliation.
